As we age, the face shows signs of aging by losing fat in places that make the face appear more youthful and gain fat in undesirable places. In addition, gravity causes the skin and the underlying fat to descend. This descent causes wrinkling in the lower portion of the face near the nose and mouth. Injectable fillers are perfect to address these concerns. The injectable filler will "fill up" the wrinkle and decrease the shadowing created by the wrinkle thus creating a more youthful appearance.
Dr. Vinyard uses Juvederm XC as his filler of choice. This filler has a combined numbing medicine that allows the area injected to become numb during the procedure. Juvederm XC is a hyaluronic acid based product. Hyaluronic acids are naturally found in the body which makes this product a good choice for a non-permanent filler. Injections are commonly placed in the lower part of the face. The areas include the nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the mouth), labiomental folds (lines from the corner of the mouth to the chin), and around the mouth.
Some people may experience bruising since filler has a thicker consistency. However, we employ techniques such as pre-cooling the treated area and requesting that you avoid aspirin and ibruprofen products for 2 weeks prior to injection. This can reduce the risk of bruising. If bruising does occur, it is usually minimal and can be easy covered with a concealer.
Juvederm XC treatments usually last between 9-18 months depending on the area injected and the patient's metabolism. The product is slowly absorbed by the body in a natural way. At this point you will be able to notice the wrinkle has returned although some residual correction may still persist.
To maximize your results for facial rejuvenation utilizing a non-surgical approach, you may also benefit from Botox treatment. This is most commonly used to address wrinkles that occur in the the upper part of the face such as the forehead, area in between the eyebrows, and around the crow's feet. The combination of an Injectable Filler and Botox Cosmetic is the "Liquid Facelift". Another factor to remember is the overall health and appearance of the skin itself. At the Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery, we carry only physician dispensed skin care lines that require a prescription.
