The breast augmentation journey is exciting. From the day of your consultation to the first day you get to show off your new figure in the clothes you never thought you could wear.  There are many things to look forward to and a lot of decisions to make. So, where do you even start? For most people, choosing what type of breast implant is best for you is one of the first decisions that must be made. So, how do you choose between the two breast implant options? Keep reading to find out.

What Are Saline Breast Implants?

As the name implies, saline breast implants are implants filled with sterile saltwater. The implants are empty upon insertion but then filled to the desired size once inside the breast. Because of this, the incision site is relatively small. Saline implants are round and come in many different sizes and dimensions.  However, as the name does not imply, the outer shell of a saline implant is made from solid silicone, just the same as the silicone gel breast implants.

What Are the Pros of Saline Breast Implants?

Some of the benefits of saline breast implants include:

  • Less expensive
  • Allow for more flexibility with breast volume
  • A ruptured implant is obvious because of the immediate decreased breast volume seen after injury.

What Are The Cons Of Saline Breast Implants?

While saline breast implants have many benefits, there are also some drawbacks such as:

  • There are reports of rippling with saline implants (when folds, wrinkles, and edges can be seen through the skin)
  • There are reports of sloshing with some saline implants
  • There are reports that saline implants deflate at a rate of 1% a year
  • There are reports that they feel more firm and less natural

What Are Silicone Breast Implants?

Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel and inserted into the breast. Some state that the feel of silicone implants are more like natural breast tissue. Silicone implants retain their shape well over the years and are firmer than saline implants. Silicone implants come in either round or teardrop shapes and various sizes.

What Are the Pros of Silicone Breast Implants?

Some of the benefits of silicone breast implants include:

  • They are generally more popular due to the more natural feel
  • They maintain their shape very well
  • Less likely to result in dimples or rippling

What Are The Cons Of Silicone Breast Implants?

Just like saline implants, silicone implants also have cons to consider. Some of them include:

  • If the silicone implant leaks, it is usually much more difficult to detect
  • More expensive than saline implants

Which Breast Implant Is Safer?

Breast augmentation using either silicone or saline is considered entirely safe from a medical standpoint when done under a skilled, certified surgeon. At Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery, we pride ourselves on prioritizing patient safety and care above all. Dr. Vinyard, MD, FACS, is a Board-Certified plastic surgeon with years of experience in cosmetic plastic surgery and advanced breast reconstruction. Additionally, Dr. Vinyard earned his way into a prestigious and rare Aesthetic and Breast Surgery Fellowship and became one of the few surgeons to complete four full surgical training programs in General Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Advanced Breast Reconstructive Surgery and Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Surgery. As a result, patients under Dr. Vinyard’s care can rest assured that they will be receiving the best quality breast augmentation under a highly skilled and highly esteemed surgeon.

Which Option Is Better?

The best breast implant option is the option that will achieve the patient’s goals. This means that there isn’t a cut-and-dry answer. Instead, it’s entirely dependent on what best fulfills what the patient is looking for. Since there are so many customizable options — including size, shape, material, placing, profile, etc. — it’s essential to weigh the pros and cons of each option.

Breast augmentation procedures can be very flexible depending on the patient’s desires. Whether a patient is looking for a natural look, a breast reconstruction, a Dolly Parton look, a natural breast increase, etc., there are many ways to personalize a breast augmentation.
