So you’ve scheduled your breast augmentation! Your aesthetic goals are about to become a reality!

Before your surgery day, it’s essential to prepare for your recovery physically, mentally, and even emotionally! While William J. Vinyard, MD, FACS, will give you a detailed preparation plan before the surgery, we want to remind you of a few things as your surgery date approaches.

Preparing for Your Breast Augmentation Surgery

Surround Yourself with a Trusted Circle

Although the prospect of the final result is exhilarating, it’s essential to be aware that surgery can be taxing on your body both physically and mentally. It’s common to experience fatigue, anxiety, pain, and even difficulty sleeping after undergoing a surgical procedure requiring anesthesia. Additionally, immediately after surgery, you may experience dizziness, feeling faint or nausea; for this reason, we strongly suggest that you have a friend and/or family member stay with you for at least 24 hours after your procedure to both ensure your safety ambulating and to relieve any possible anxiety or stress you may feel after your procedure. Once your surgery is scheduled, start thinking about who you may be able to rely on in the initial recovery period.

Some of our patients prefer to have an experienced nurse providing care and companionship in the initial recovery period. Although we don’t offer this service at VIPS, if you’re interested in hiring a nurse for your recovery, you can speak to one of our team members who can point you in the right direction for where to hire a nurse.

Set Up Your Recovery Room with Essential Items

Once you arrive home after your surgery, you’ll be instructed to remain (mostly) in bed and/or a reclining chair and allow your body to begin the healing process. This means you won’t want to stress about where to find a granola bar, how you’re going to get the TV remote out from under the bed, who’s going to answer the ringing phone from across the house, or where your medications are. We recommend making a “rest” station beside your bed and/or chair at least a day before you go into surgery to make sure that you’re as comfortable as possible once you return home.

Some items you’ll want to have on hand include:

  • Snacks
  • Water
  • Bendy straws to make drinking easier
  • Chapstick
  • Socks
  • A book, Kindle or other entertainment material
  • Tissue paper
  • Your TV remote (with extra batteries)
  • Your phone charger
  • Your home phone (if you have one)
  • Medication (this includes making sure you have all your prescriptions filled too)

Trust us! It’s the little things that can make all the difference.

Ask Someone to Watch the Kids

If you have young kids, you’ll want someone to help care for them while you’re in recovery. Additionally, you’ll want your environment to be as peaceful as possible to ensure that you can rest. Whether this means asking your spouse to take over your house chores for a while, hiring a babysitter, or passing the kids to a relative for a few days, it’s a good idea to make sure these things are taken care of in order to minimize any undue stress or chaos.

And yes, this includes furry kids too! Your dog, cat, bird, hamster, bunny, etc., fall into this category as well. Although you may think it’ll be therapeutic to have a pet by your side, it’s a good idea to have someone care for them to give you peace of mind and ensure you aren’t tempted to over-exert yourself trying to feed, bathe or walk your furry friend.

Plan Easy Meal Prep in Advance

Meal planning and preparation can be exhausting during a normal period, let alone after you’ve undergone cosmetic surgery. It’s advisable to stock your fridge and freezer with easy-to-cook meals so that you can eat well without tiring yourself in the first week or two post-surgery. You can either cook your favorite foods in advance and freeze them, buy some easy-prep meals, or order from a food delivery service, minimizing time on your feet and stress on your mind.
